After this, we go to the Main Square where the Government Palace and the Town Hall are located. We will visit the Cathedral and explore the San Francisco convent, built in the seventeenth century, to discover the mystery of its catacombs.
At the appropriate time, transfer to the Lima International Airport for your outbound flight.
Important Note: The Cathedral of Lima is not open to tourists on Saturday afternoons and Sunday all day; it will be replaced with a visit to Huaca Huallamarca, an ancient pre-Inca shrine.

In the afternoon, our exploration will take us to the Sacsayhuaman Archaeological Park where we will start our excursion visiting the fortress with the same name, a beautiful place that radiates peace and quiet, where we will be able to admire the huge rocks measuring up to 4 meters high that were used in its construction.
We will then head for Q’enqo, the ancient temple of the Puma, where we will be able to appreciate the sacrifices altar in the inner part of an enormous carved rock. From there, we will continue to Tambomachay, the sacred fountains of life and health. On the way back to Cusco, we will have a panoramic view from Puca Pucara; a watchtower that controlled the entrance to the city.
In Cusco, we will visit Korikancha, the Temple of the Sun, on top of which the Saint Dominique Convent was built. History says that this temple was entirely lined in gold sheets when the Spanish conquistadors arrived. At the end of our tour, we will go to the Main Square and will visit the Cathedral where invaluable colonial paintings and other works of art, such as the Cross that, arrived with the first conquistadors can be admired.
Important Note: People are not allowed to enter religious sites wearing shorts. Taking photos is not allowed inside the Cathedral.
Day 4 | Cusco / Day Trip to Machu Picchu / Cusco | B.L.
After breakfast at the hotel, you will be transferred to the train station to board the train to Aguas Calientes. During the journey, we will appreciate several landmarks in the Sacred Valley of the Incas, including the hanging bridge that signals the start of the Inca Trail. The railway follows the course of the Urubamba River, also known as Vilcanota River, climbing down and entering a canyon until we reach Aguas Calientes; the town that is located at the foot of the Machu Picchu Mountain.
After getting off the train, we will board the mini-bus that will take us up the winding road to Machu Picchu; the Sacred Citadel of the Incas and considered one of the New Wonders of the World. The Lost City of the Incas will astonish us with its terraces, ceremonial shrines, steps and urban areas. Energy will be all around us. After a well-paced guided visit, we will have lunch at one of the restaurants in the area and then will be ready to return to Cusco by train. Arrival and transfer to the hotel.
Day 5 | Cusco / Puerto Maldonado: the Peruvian Amazon | B.L.D.
After breakfast at the hotel, transfer to the airport for your flight to Puerto Maldonado (airfare is not included). Upon arrival, we will meet and greet you at the airport and drive you ten minutes to our Puerto Maldonado headquarters. While enjoying your first taste of the forest in our gardens we will ask you to pack only the necessary gear for your next few days, and leave the rest in our safe deposit; this helps us keep the boats and cargo light.
Once all of us are ready to continue, we will drive 20 kilometers to the Tambopata River Port, entering the Native Community of Infierno; the port facilities are owned and operated by the community.
A Boxed Lunch will be provided for the next portion of your journey; a boat ride that will take you about 45 minutes navigating along the Tambopata River and through the Community’s Primary Forest Private Reserve until you reach Posada Amazonas where you will enjoy a three-night stay. Upon arrival, the lodge manager will welcome you and brief you with important navigation and security tips.
Canopy tower: A twenty minute walk from Posada Amazonas leads to the 30 meter scaffolding canopy tower. A banister staircase running through the middle provides safe access to the platforms above. From atop you obtain spectacular views of the vast expanses of standing forest, cut by the Tambopata River winding through the middle. Now and then, toucans, parrots or macaws are seen flying against the horizon, or mixed species of canopy flocks land in the treetop next to you.
Day 6 | Exploring the Amazon: Tres Chimbadas Oxbow Lake | B.L.D.
Tres Chimbadas is thirty minutes by boat and forty five minutes hiking from Posada Amazonas. Once there you will paddle around the lake in a catamaran, searching for the resident family of nine giant river otters (seen by 60% of our lake visitors) and other lakeside wildlife such as caiman, hoatzin and horned screamers. Lunch.
Ethno botanical Tour: A twenty minute boat drive down river leads you to a trail, designed by the staff of the Centro Nape. The Centro Nape is a communal organization that produces medicines from forest plants and administers them to patients who choose their little clinic. They have produced a trail which explains the different medicinal (and other) uses of selected plants. Dinner.
Night walk. You will have the option of hiking out at night, when most of the mammals are active but rarely seen. Much easier to find are frogs, with shapes and sounds as bizarre as their natural histories.
Day 7 | Exploring the Amazon: Parrot Clay Lick | B.L.D.
This clay lick is only a twenty minute walk from Posada Amazonas. From a lookout located about twenty meters away, you will see dozens of parrots and parakeets descend, on most clear mornings, to ingest the clay on a river bank. Species such as Mealy and Yellow-headed Amazon, Blue-headed Parrot and Dusky headed Parakeet descend at this clay lick. The clay lick is active at dawn, during the late mornings and mid-afternoons. Breakfast.
Ceiba Trail Hike: We leave from the lobby at Posada Amazonas and embark on a two hour hike crowned by the largest tree in the vicinity: a giant Ceiba tree. During the hike we will focus on the natural history of the rain forest and its principal taxonomic groups. Lunch.
Farm Visit: A thirty minute boat drive down river takes us to the most complete farm in the community of Infierno. The owner grows a diverse variety of popular and unknown Amazon crops. In his garden, just about every plant and tree serves a purpose. Dinner.
Day 8 | Puerto Maldonado / Lima | B.
Today we retrace our river and road journey back to Puerto Maldonado, our office and the airport; depending on your flight schedule, this may require dawn departures. Fly to Lima (airfare is not included). Upon your arrival in Lima, check-in for your onward flight.
